“This is stupid,” Hunter announced as we ate breakfast. “Provine, you’re coming at this all wrong.”

“Really.” She didn’t look up from her greens.

“Watch your tone,” Burk growled, surprising everyone. “She commands here.”

Hunter shook his head. “Get your brute on a leash and listen to me: you’re working towards failure.”

Provine Sael nodded to Burk, a simple chin dip that set him back to eating. “Explain yourself, Hunter.”

“You have a group that includes four non-Humans, including a very well-dressed Dellian and two massive brutes, both accomplished pit fighters. It’s no wonder the Sagrit are dogging our heels: you’ve a group that stands out wherever it goes.”

“I used what was to hand.”

“You’re on an undertaking that has predictable movements. When they failed in Fellhome the Sagrit knew you would head north into the wilds, and that if you were successful the nearest place to seek reference would be Merrywine. So they waited there, and now they’re back on our heels. You’re predictable and distinctive, and that is going to get us all killed.”

I didn’t like his tone and I had no idea who or what the ‘Sagrit’ was, but Provine Sael was listening so I listened, too.

“Do you have a suggestion, Hunter?”

“Yeah: stop making the obvious next move. There’s not much we can do about standing out, but we can choose a better route.”

She ate her greens thoughtfully. “What do you see as the obvious next move?”

“The Grand Library in Fellhome. No doubt they have people following us, but I’m certain they already have plenty waiting in Fellhome, too.”

“So you suggest we seek a library elsewhere?”

“No. I suggest we avoid libraries entirely. The Sagrit have a decent idea of where we are, and if we don’t show up at Fellhome, they’ll just cover the libraries that are the next closest.”

“Are you suggesting we quit?” Hatcher asked with a touch of belligerence.

“I’ve given up on that. What we need to do is disappear from sight so that the Sagrit become unsure of where we are and have to cover many possible destinations; they are numerous, but finite. Then we need to seek the knowledge from an unconventional source; if we complete a step in your mad scheme without the Sagrit realizing it, they might not catch up.”

“So where do you suggest we hide? We’ve got trackers on our trail, so just finding a discreet copse won’t suffice,” Torl pointed out.

“We head due west for a couple days until we hit Greenward’s Way, and then follow that southwest to the Concourse.”

The others seemed to ponder this; why, I did not know because none of this made sense to me.

“Even as a group we would not stand out at the Concourse,” Hatcher admitted, sprinkling a little more of her dark sauce on her food.

“Even less if we joined up with another band heading there,” Hunter pointed out. “And it is a place where minding one’s own business is respected.”

“The Concourse is not a place for the thrifty,” Provine noted. “My funds are not unlimited. They may not be sufficient for the delay and added expense.
